SUMMARY:Archaeological Iron: Context.Corrosion.Conservation
DESCRIPTION:International Conference on 13–14 August 2026 at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA) in Mainz\, dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of archaeological iron.\n\n\nThe conference focuses on how find context\, material properties\, corrosion processes and conservation interventions jointly shape both the present condition of objects and their archaeological interpretation. Its aim is to bring these perspectives together in order to better understand the role of iron as a source of historical information. \nThe programme is structured into three thematic sections. The first addresses the production\, technology and provenance of archaeological iron. The second focuses on corrosion processes and states of preservation from a scientific perspective. The third section examines conservation and restoration treatments as part of the object’s biography and considers their impact on interpretation. \nWith international participation\, the conference seeks to encourage exchange between archaeology\, the natural sciences and conservation-restoration\, and to stimulate new research approaches and collaborations. \nProgramme and registration

SUMMARY:Workshop: East meets West
DESCRIPTION:EAST MEETS WEST \nTraditional Japanese techniques and materials for paper conservation.\nTraining course at the Institut für Bestandserhaltung und Restaurierung (IBR) \nBayerische Staatsbibliothek München\, 24.-28.08.2026 \nEAST MEETS WEST is a five-day training workshop led by Keisuke Sugiyama\, Professor of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts in Yamagata (Japan). Previously\, Sugiyama worked for eight years as a senior conservator of Japanese paintings at the British Museum’s Hirayama Studio in London. \nAs a participant\, you will explore traditional Japanese materials\, adhesives and tools\, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their unique properties. You will also have the opportunity to craft a Karibari to understand its intricate structure and function in depth. In addition\, you will receive hands-on training in lining techniques using a Karibari\, combining practical application with a thorough theoretical grounding of this Japanese method. Our aim is to deepen your understanding of Japanese materials and techniques\, enabling you to incorporate them effectively into Western conservation techniques. \nThe workshop also offers a forum for the exchange of knowledge about paper conservation from East Asian and Western cultures. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a Japanese conservator. You will be provided with a set of original best quality Japanese tools to enable immediate application of newly acquired techniques and facilitate prompt integration into your daily practice. \nWorkshop is limited to 10 participants. Closing date: May 08\, 2026 \nDate: August 24 – 28\, 2026 (Monday through Friday) \nInstructor: Keisuke Sugiyama \nLanguage: English \nLocation: Bayerische Staatsbibliothek\, München Fee: 980 Euro (including materials\, Japanese tools\, evening reception) \nContact:\nBayerischeStaatsbibliothek\nInstitut für Bestandserhaltung und Restaurierung (IBR)\nE-Mail: ibr.sekretariat@bsb bsb-muenchen.de\nPhone: +49 (0)89 -28638 -2238
