Bevaringstenestene (The Conservation Department) currently has a full-time permanent position available for an object or furniture conservator to join our team of specialists in metal, object, and furniture conservation.
Bevaringstenestene is a department within MuHo (Museum Centre i Hordaland) that consists of 14 staff, including experienced collection managers and conservators specialised in preventive conservation and remedial conservation of objects and textiles, as well as administrative and operational staff.
The successful candidate will primarily work on conservation projects for external clients, but will also collaborate with museums across Vestland to improve collection care—whether in storage, exhibitions, or historic interiors.
Our team includes employees from several countries, and the working languages are Norwegian and English.
The main workplace is Salhus (approximately 20 km north of Bergen city centre), but the position requires on-site work at museums and with external clients as needed. Some travel should be expected.

Responsibilities:
The position primarily involves condition assessment and remedial conservation of cultural heritage objects.
Other tasks may include:
- Condition assessment and conservation of church interiors
- Preventive conservation, such as packing, cleaning, and condition assessment for storage
- Preparing loan reports for exhibitions, packing objects for transport and exhibition installation
- Cleaning historic interiors (Housekeeping)
- Writing reports related to consulting services, conservation, and treatment proposals
- Occasionally delivering courses and presentations for museum staff and external clients.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or equivalent in conservation, plus relevant practical experience
- Applicants must specify which object types they have experience with or if they have a specialisation
- Proficiency in a Nordic language and/or English, both written and spoken
- Non-Norwegian speakers are required to learn Norwegian within two years; language training is provided
- Experience with standard Office applications, object photography, and basic photo editing
- Experience with collection management databases (e.g., Primus) is an advantage
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license (Class B) and ability to drive in Norwegian winter conditions
- Comfortable working at heights (scaffolding and ladders)
