Workshop: East meets West

26. August - 30. August

Traditional Japanese techniques and materials for paper conservation Training course at the Institut für Bestandserhaltung und Restaurierung (IBR) Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München, August 2024

EAST MEETS WEST is a five-day training workshop led by Keisuke Sugiyama, Professor of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts in Yamagata (Japan). Previously, Sugiyama worked for eight years as a senior conservator of Japanese paintings at the British Museum’s Hirayama Studio in London.

As a participant you will learn about traditional Japanese materials, glues and tools. You also will be trained in lining techniques using a karibari, including both practical application and theoretical knowledge of this famous technique.

Our aim is to provide you with a better understanding of Japanese materials and techniques to facilitate its integration into Western conservation practice.
The workshop also offers a forum for the exchange of knowledge about paper conservation from East Asian and Western cultures. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a Japanese conservator.

You will be provided with a set of original best quality Japanese tools to enable immediate application of newly acquired techniques and facilitate prompt integration into your daily practice.
