Multi- and hyperspectral imaging in cultural heritage: definitions, technical aspects, and applications

Multi- and hyperspectral imaging is based on the acquisition of the reflected light from an object in a series of spectral bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. Spectral imaging is a powerful tool for the visualization of hidden structures and the characterization of materials of complex works of art, considering that the visual output is easily readable also for a non-scientific audience.

The differentiation between multi- and hyperspectral imaging is rather complicated and often causes confusion in the cultural heritage community. In general, hyperspectral imaging is based on the use of remote sensing imaging spectrometers that collect data in very narrow spectral bands whereas multispectral imaging refers to a set of images taken within broader spectral bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. This difference has an impact on the instrumentation, workflow, and output of the two imaging techniques.

This lecture has the aim of clarifying definitions, describing technical aspects (such as instruments, processing tools etc.), and showing applications of multi- and hyperspectral imaging, even combined with other imaging modalities.
